Working-from-holiday? It’s the new WFH.
We think it’s safe to say that the world is no longer the place that it was. As every aspect of our lives has been upended in ways we couldn’t have imagined back in 2019, the way that we work has been completely transformed too. With remote working here to stay, your office can now be anywhere with a desk and an internet connection - which means it could be just about, well, anywhere… even a bolthole on the South Devon coast…
If you’re looking to book yourself a “workation” in a beautiful region of the UK (or indeed anywhere in the world!) then there are a few things you might want to look for as you choose the perfect place to stay:
Super-fast broadband
It might sound obvious, but there is nothing worse than slow wifi when you’ve got to get stuff done, and beautiful rural or coastal locations aren’t always known for their broadband speeds. It’s worth checking (and then checking again) that the cottage, hotel or apartment you’ve got your eye on has wifi speeds that can cope with your Monday morning team meeting, let alone that crucial board presentation…!
A comfortable set-up
However you like to work, make sure the place you choose for your working holiday has a set up that’s as good as your office - and preferably better. After all, you’re on holiday too. A proper ergonomic chair can make sure you don’t come home needing an osteopath, and if you need a big monitor for spreadsheets - well, best make sure you’ve got a big monitor. At Studio Cottage we have a Herman Miller sit-stand desk, Herman Miller chair, 4k monitor and state-of-the-art webcam, so all you have to do is plug in your laptop, and off you go.
A spectacular setting
You might be working, but the whole point of a workation is a change of scene, and when you’ve logged off you want to make sure you can really enjoy the place you’re in. A dip in the sea before your 9am check in? A hilltop walk on your lunchbreak? A spectacular view for your coffee break? Find a spot that allows you the chance to play and relax, as well as the opportunity to work.
Local amenities
If you’ve been working all day, you might not want to be cooking all evening - and you might fancy a post-work pint! Perhaps your day never really starts until you’ve had a foaming latte, or you want to make sure there’s somewhere to grab a quick lunch. Depending on your working style, a charming village location - with a pub, coffee spot or village pub - might be a better fit than a remote rural retreat.
Space to relax
And lastly - and perhaps most obviously! - you’ll need somewhere to unwind. A bit of luxury to remind yourself you’re not at home, perhaps, or just space for the family to hang out once you’ve clocked off the day. Your boss might just see you as “working from home” - but you’re not. You’re working from holiday, and it should feel like it!
Here at Studio Cottage, we’ve done everything we can to make sure the cottage is the perfect retreat for a remote working break - a “workation”, if you will! - and are delighted to be partnered with Ashore, a brand new platform showcasing the best homes for remote-working across the UK.
Every Ashore home is equipped with super-fast broadband, a Herman Miller sit-stand desk and ergonomic chair, 4k monitor and state-of-the-art webcam, and Studio Cottage is no exception. Our dedicated workspace is ideal for a day at the (virtual) office, and our location in the heart of a gorgeous village on the South Devon coast means it still feels like a holiday. Plus the village shop sells WAY better lattes than Pret…!
If you’re interested in booking yourself a remote working holiday at Studio Cottage, then get in touch - and sign up to the Ashore community to get access to remote-working breaks across the country.
Happy holidays!
